How to play Sudoku — and how to solve it

The Rules

The puzzle is played on a 9×9 grid divided into nine non-overlapping 3×3 boxes. The heavy borders on the board show you exactly where each box begins and ends.

Every row (horizontal line of nine cells) must contain each digit from 1 through 9 exactly once — no digit may repeat.

Every column (vertical line of nine cells) must contain each digit from 1 through 9 exactly once — no digit may repeat.

Every 3×3 box must contain each digit from 1 through 9 exactly once — no digit may repeat.

Bold digits are given at the start of the puzzle and are fixed — they cannot be changed or cleared. All other cells are yours to fill.

A valid Sudoku puzzle has exactly one solution. If you find more than one arrangement that satisfies the rules, something went wrong earlier in the solve.

The key insight: Every placement decision follows from the three constraints together — row, column, and box. A digit that is valid for the row and column may still be illegal if its box already contains it. Always check all three.

Reading the Board

The TNT Sudoku board uses visual cues to help you navigate the 81-cell grid without losing your place.

Bold / green-tinted — given digit, cannot be changed

Green highlight — the cell you have selected (active)

Red highlight — conflict detected: this digit already appears in the same row, column, or box

Blue italic underline — marked cell: you flagged this entry as uncertain

The alternating light-green and white shading of rows is purely for visual readability — it groups the three rows within each box-tier. The rules apply identically to all cells regardless of shading.

Solving Strategies

Work through these strategies in order. The easiest ones solve the most cells on beginner puzzles. Harder puzzles require the intermediate and advanced techniques.

1. Scanning & Cross-Hatching

Beginner

Pick any digit — say, 7. Find every row and column that already contains a 7. In each 3×3 box that does not yet have a 7, the rows and columns carrying existing 7s are eliminated. If only one cell remains in the box after elimination, place the 7 there.

Repeat this scan for all nine digits before moving to harder techniques. On easy puzzles, scanning alone often solves 60–70% of the board.

Tip: Scan the digit that appears most frequently on the board first — more existing placements mean fewer valid cells to check.

2. Naked Single

Beginner

Look at any empty cell. List which digits cannot go there — every digit that already appears in the cell’s row, column, or box is eliminated. If eight of the nine digits are eliminated, only one digit remains: that is the Naked Single. Place it immediately.

This is the most common deduction in easy and medium puzzles. Train yourself to spot cells with only one possibility before working harder techniques.

Tip: After placing any digit, re-examine all cells in that digit’s row, column, and box — a new Naked Single often appears as a chain reaction.

3. Hidden Single

Intermediate

Look at a row, column, or box. For each digit, find all the cells where it could legally go. If a digit can go in only one cell within that group — even if that cell appears to have multiple possibilities — the digit must go in that cell. This is the Hidden Single.

Example: In a row, the digit 4 is legally possible in three cells. In the box containing those cells, two of the three positions are already eliminated by a 4 in an adjacent box. The remaining cell is the only legal home for 4 in both the row and the box — place it.

Tip: Scan each 3×3 box for Hidden Singles before scanning rows and columns — boxes have the tightest constraints and reveal hidden singles most readily.

4. Systematic Elimination

Intermediate

For each unfilled cell, mentally (or with the Mark feature) list all digits that are still candidates. Apply all three constraints simultaneously — row, column, and box — to reduce the candidate list. A cell whose list shrinks to one digit is a Naked Single. A digit whose candidate cells within a group shrink to one is a Hidden Single.

This is not a single trick but a disciplined work habit: never guess until elimination has been exhausted. Most published “moderate” puzzles are fully solvable by elimination alone.

5. Naked Pair

Intermediate

If two cells within the same row, column, or box each have exactly the same two candidate digits (and no others), those two digits must go in those two cells — in some order. This means both digits can be eliminated from every other cell in that shared row, column, or box.

Example: Cells A and B in the same box both list only {3, 8} as candidates. You cannot yet determine which cell gets the 3 and which gets the 8 — but you know with certainty that no other cell in the box can hold either digit. Remove 3 and 8 from all other candidate lists in the box.

Tip: Naked Pairs are easiest to spot in boxes that are nearly complete. After placing six or seven digits in a box, the remaining cells often form a naked pair.

6. Box–Line Reduction (Pointing Pair)

Intermediate

Within a 3×3 box, find a digit whose only candidate cells all fall in the same row or the same column. Because the digit must go in one of those cells, it cannot appear anywhere else in that row or column outside the box. Eliminate it from the rest of the row or column.

Example: In the top-left box, the digit 6 can only go in row 2 (both possible cells are in row 2). Therefore, 6 cannot be in any other cell of row 2 across the entire board. Remove 6 from the candidate lists of all other row-2 cells.

Tip: This technique works in reverse too: if a digit in a row is confined to one box, it can be eliminated from the rest of that box (Line–Box Reduction).

7. Using the Mark Feature (Candidate Notation)

Advanced

When applying intermediate or advanced techniques, use the M key in the TNT Sudoku app to mark cells you have placed but are not yet confident about. A marked cell displays in blue italic underline — a visual reminder that this digit was your best current deduction, not a certainty.

In pencil-and-paper Sudoku, players write small candidate digits in each cell’s corner. The Mark feature serves a similar purpose: it flags cells for review. When a conflict appears (red highlight), trace back through your marked cells to find where the chain of deductions went wrong.

Tip: Mark any cell you placed by elimination through a Naked Pair or Box-Line Reduction. If a contradiction appears later, marked cells are where you look first.

8. Trial and Error (Last Resort)

Advanced

When all logical techniques have been exhausted and multiple cells still have two or more candidates, you may need to hypothesize: choose a cell with exactly two candidates, place one, and continue solving. If a contradiction appears (a row, column, or box requires a digit that is no longer available), the hypothesis was wrong — the other candidate is correct.

This is a valid strategy but should always be a last resort. Most Sudoku puzzles rated “expert” or lower are solvable without guessing. If you reach trial and error quickly, more scanning and elimination are usually still available.

Tip: Always mark hypothesized cells so you know exactly where to backtrack if a contradiction appears. Use the C key to clear a cell and restore the alternative candidate.

Using the TNT Sudoku App

The app has three interactive areas: the 9×9 board, the digit palette (1–9, E, C, M), and the demo loader.

Loading a Puzzle

Demo ↓ Use the dropdown to choose a puzzle. Difficulty ranges from Easy (Demos 3 and 5) through Classic (Demo 1) to Five Stars (Demo 2). Solution boards are available in Demos 4 and 6 for self-checking. Load Demo Clicks the Load button to populate the board with the chosen puzzle. Bold cells are the given digits and are locked.

Entering Digits

Click cell Activates the cell (green highlight). Only non-frozen cells respond to clicks. Clicking an active cell again deselects it. 1–9 Places the selected digit in the active cell. If the digit creates a conflict (duplicate in row, column, or box), the cell turns red immediately. E Commit / deselect. Removes the active (green) highlight from the current cell without changing its value. Use this when you are done with a cell and want to move on cleanly. C Clear. Erases the digit in the active cell, removes any error or mark state, and returns it to empty. Cannot clear a frozen (given) cell. M Mark / unmark. Toggles the blue italic underline on the active cell — your signal that this entry is uncertain. A marked cell is not locked; you can still clear or overwrite it after unmarking.

Feedback States

Green The active cell — currently selected, ready to receive a digit from the palette. Red Conflict detected. The digit you placed matches an existing digit in the same row, column, or box. The entry is recorded but flagged as wrong. Clear it (C) and choose a different digit. Blue italic Marked cell. You flagged this entry as tentative. The digit is recorded and participates in conflict detection normally. Bold Given / frozen digit. Pre-filled at puzzle load. Cannot be cleared or overwritten. Hovering shows a pink tint as a reminder.
Workflow reminder: Click a cell → click a digit in the palette (or click the palette digit first, then the cell — both orders work). When you click a digit in the palette while a cell is already active, the digit is placed immediately. When you click a cell while a digit is already selected in the palette, the digit is placed immediately. Either order achieves the same result.

When You’re Stuck

  • Re-scan all nine digits from scratch
  • Look for cells with only 2 candidates
  • Check every box for Hidden Singles
  • Look for digits confined to one row/col in a box
  • Check for red cells — fix conflicts first
  • If all else fails: mark and try one hypothesis
