Shell Game

(aka 'The Monte Hall Problem')

Should you stay or switch?!: Stage

Let's Make a Deal!

In the olden days, there was a game show, Let's Make a Deal, hosted by master barterer, Monte Hall. Zanily-dressed contestants would vie for prizes that they bargained for with Monte.

A classic climax to each episode featured contestants who were given a choice of picking a prize behind 1 of 3 doors. Behind one door was a valuable prize. Behind the other 2 doors were goofy, non-desirable booby prizes.

Having selected a door, Monte would then reveal one of the remaining doors which featured one of the booby prizes. Contestants were then given the opportunity to change their door selection.

Should they switch or stay?!?

In these modern times, we use plastic cups or 'shells' to hide the prize and the bogus items. The idea is the same, nevertheless.

This simulation lets you play the game yourself and track your 'winnings;' you can try each strategy (switch or stay) and see if there is any significant difference between the strategies.

We also feature an automated game play where you pick the number of games and the computer runs them lickety-split and shows you the summary statistics.

What's the math behind this?

There are many online explanations of this phenomenon, so be sure to check them out!

Feeling nostalgic?

Watching the LMAD Movie Clips made us feel nostalgic for the good-ole sliding doors you see pictured above. Therefore, we wrote a P5JS app to simulate the opening and closing of the LMAD doors.
