Koch Snowflake Sagasnowflake

Stage 3: Flaky Recursion

About this stage

It's here! Move the levels slider: for a level > 0, you will see trianglular 'bumps' along the straight edges of the triangle....

But those bumps have bumps...if you increase the levels.

To help clarify the process, we changed the color of segments as they are drawn: cycles of red, green, blue and black.

The result is self-similarity: at ever-increasing levels of magnification, the child image looks like the parent.

It reminds us of the following rhyme from the mathematician Augustus De Morgan:

great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em,
and little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum.
and the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater fleas to go on;
while these again have greater still, and greater still, and so on.
