The fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel is older than almost any technology your teacher will demonstrate this year. Two children, a forest, a gingerbread house — and a trail of breadcrumbs that gets eaten by birds before they can follow it home.

tells visitors where they are in a site’s hierarchy. In JavaScript
programming, a breadcrumb is a

Fun Facts — Mel-O-Toons
- Mel-O-Toons was a syndicated animated TV series produced in the late 1950s–early 1960s, featuring low-budget retellings of classic fairy tales and nursery rhymes. Episodes aired across the US on local stations.
- The series is a textbook example of limited animation: a cost-cutting technique that slashed the number of drawings per second, substituting narration, held frames, and simple cycling loops for full movement. Characters barely move; the story is carried almost entirely by the voice track and music.
- Limited animation is a trade-off students will recognize from programming: efficiency vs. fidelity. Mel-O-Toons chose budget over visual richness — the same analysis a developer makes when choosing between a smooth 60 fps CSS animation and a lightweight two-frame toggle. Both work. Only one is cheap to produce.
- The
start=parameter in a YouTube embed URL sets the initial playback position in seconds, sending viewers directly to the relevant moment without requiring a separate clip. A small but practical use of URL parameters — the same mechanism behind query strings in web apps.

- “Bewitched Bunny” is a Looney Tunes short directed by Chuck Jones — one of the most influential animation directors of the 20th century, responsible for defining the look, timing, and personality of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, and Road Runner.
- Jones and his Warner Bros. colleagues codified what are now called the 12 principles of animation — squash and stretch, anticipation, staging, follow-through, timing, and more. These principles describe how motion must behave to feel physically convincing and emotionally readable. They are still the foundation of animation education worldwide.
- Those principles are essentially a physics engine described in words. A bouncing-ball p5.js sketch implements squash-and-stretch and velocity falloff in code. Chuck Jones was hand-drawing the same physics in 1954. Students who build simulations are working in a direct line from the Looney Tunes studio.
- The short is notable for its fourth-wall-breaking ending: Bugs turns directly to the audience to deliver the final punchline. This technique — breaking the frame to address the viewer — is the comedic equivalent of a
console.log()aimed at the developer rather than the user. Bugs is leaving a breadcrumb. - Jones’ timing is studied in film schools: held frames, smear frames, and anticipation beats placed with near-mathematical precision. Watching the short with the sound off reveals a visual rhythm beneath the comedy that looks, to a programmer’s eye, very much like a well-structured event loop.
