Some things never change....

gameBoard
Initial 6 x 8 board with 6 'A' tiles selected

The 'Same Game' is one of them! This is a classic Windows game that we brought back to life. It sports some customized tiles (based on classes) and utilizes recursion when finding adjacent neighbors.

Wikipedia chronicles its extensive history, dating back to 1985. YouTube shows an earlier version in action.

Traditional boards are larger (like 10 x 20) but we started small. Future development will include larger boards.

Game Play Essentials:
  • Eliminate as many 'same' tiles as possible
  • Tiles can only be eliminated if they share common walls. At least 2 tiles must be neighbors to be eliminated
  • Select tiles with a mouse click; deselect tiles with the Deselect button
  • The more selected neighbors you have, the more points you get, according to the equation:
    y = x2 - 3x + 4 once they are vaporized
  • As tiles are vaporized (via the Delete button), remaining tiles shift down and/or to the left
  • Strategic selections move greater numbers of neighbors together: the charts show tile counts, potential points to be gained and the current score, among other things
  • The Game Over? button identifies any remaining pairs/clusters to be evaporated
  • User statistics are below the summary tables

More development is needed: our novices no doubt will unearth bugs and suggest improvements, so we'll try to keep up with them!

Finding adjacent neighbors is a recursive process; we've rigged it where you can see the recursive steps as they are performed in the console window. Open that panel with: Shift-Ctrl-J. Click the 'Toggle Recursion' button to reveal the recursive process:
